Research and Creation Encounters

Every summer at the Avignon Festival, the French National Research Agency brings researchers and artists into dialogue. A four-year contract, three editions delivered.

Avignon Festival
01 · The brief

What had to work.

To stage, each year, for France's National Research Agency and within the Avignon Festival, a day on which the festival's programmed artists and researchers from different disciplines work together in front of an audience. A space for sharing knowledge, not a conference.

The challenge

Get programmed artists and researchers from different disciplines working together, in front of an audience.

Our scope

Venue sourcing and set design, visual identity for each edition, speaker management and filming.

02 · The set-up

What we put in place.

  1. Venue sourcing and hire, set design conceived for the place
  2. Visual identity for each edition: delegate pack, programme, banners, signage
  3. Speaker management and media support
  4. Photographic coverage, filming, editing and interviews
  5. Event website, guest lists, invitations and registration
03 · The method

How we ran it.

Stage 1

Framing meeting, definition of needs, venue selection and approval

Stage 2

Running order and schedule, coordination of technical and logistics suppliers, equipment testing

Stage 3

Welcome and registration desk, catering and breaks, operational control on the day

In pictures

Three days, in a city turned festival.

The outcome

A rare interdisciplinary crossroads: writers, actors and choreographers set their work against recent research. For the Agency, a showcase for the projects it funds; for the performing arts, a way of identifying their own research needs. Across the four years of the contract, one edition was cancelled by the pandemic and another run entirely remotely.
